PEOPLESOFT - Tuning & Configuring the Tuxedo Layer

If you ever plan to use or are currently utilizing the Peoplesoft® family of products from HR to Financials to Support, then "PeopleSoft - Tuning & Configuring the Tuxedo Layer"  is a course tailored for your organization. It is unique to the industry as this 3-day class performs an in-depth exploration into the middle layer product, BEA Tuxedo™, within the Peoplesoft environment. The course, written by an individual who was a part of the original Peoplesoft/BEA core team, is not a standard Tuxedo administration class -- it reviews only the relevant parameters, files, tools, etc. used in the Peoplesoft implementation and uses the Peoplesoft vocabulary of terms rather than the standard Tuxedo naming conventions for consistency and understanding. This makes the course tailored for the Peoplesoft user and fits into the existing Peoplesoft administration curriculum with no overlap. The course is applicable to all current releases of Peoplesoft (from versions 7.x to 8.x), as the Tuxedo layer has had only minor changes between release levels. These changes clearly are identified and flagged throughout the course for optimum student understanding.

The course is geared to teach any IT Professional from a Peoplesoft Database or System Administrator to a Technical Manager, the proper techniques to configure, administer and effectively maintain this complex environment. One of its primary focuses is to educate the participants on the methods and formulas to improve overall system performance at both the software and operating system levels. It is important to note that many of the Tuxedo tunable features/parameters, including server spawning and load balancing, are not properly set without the manual intervention knowledge learned from this course. If not properly configured, these oversights will always negatively impact a system's performance, fault tolerance and proper statistical reporting/analysis.

The course begins by unveiling the relationship between the Tuxedo and Peoplesoft products and teaches the participant the skills and procedures to directly configure, diagnose/tune and troubleshoot the Tuxedo® layer. It explains in detail the various parameters within the standard Tuxedo configuration files (known to Peoplesoft users as the PSAPPSRV.ubx/ubb files) and suggests how to tune many of these parameters for various implementation sizes (i.e. how many PSAPPSRV or JSL/WSL servers to run, how to tune the multiplexing factors, how to tune the timeout parameters). The two administration tools, tmadmin and the Web-Based GUI with their associated environment variables, are fully explored so an administrator can understand and utilize the data reported by these utilities to effectively control their systems. Finally, run-time analysis is studied including a thorough breakdown of the log files (and various common messages), frequent startup/shutdown problems (Section entitled, "When Things Go Wrong"), and configuration/tuning of the IPC resources within a UNIX or NT environment. This overall study of the middle layer environment helps to educate every PeopleSoft "owner" on the tools and proper techniques to implement and maintain a robust, scalable and efficient application.

As an added bonus, all students are encouraged to bring their own configuration files, error messages or other data to the class as time is also spent on the analysis of particular organizations' problems or questions. This perk allows all participants to receive the proper guidance on topics that may or may not be included in the course syllabus. The student learns to solve the situation and is able to move forward once they leave the classroom setting.  Essentially, a 'roadmap' is created via the student's efforts in the classroom.   Students have raved about this pioneering approach and extraordinary course content.
